Step-By-Step Guide after FCS2 Template/SFX Install onto other drive
Pat DeFilippo (Find Pat at PD Post.com)
I bought a Lacie 100GB "Rugged" drive because it is bus powered, 7200rpm (fast enough to reliably edit on), has FW800/FW400/USB2.0, fits easily into my computer bag and was available at the lowest cost that I could find (I'm a bit slower work wise this summer, so this part is particularly important)!
The biggest reason I bought it, though, wasn't necessarily for any of the above. It is mainly to take advantage of FCS2's new feature of installing templates, sound effects, etc., onto a drive other than the startup. The biggest benefit is to save at least 25GB of internal hard drive space, which is especially great for my MacBook Pro - but I also installed FCS2 this way onto my G5 Quad. Then, I can use the same external drive on either system as needed - just plug and play!
After installing the templates, sound effects, etc. onto the Lacie, which is pretty easy to re-map to during the FCS2 installation process, a problem occurred. The FCS programs (namely STP, DVDSP, Motion and LiveType) are still "looking" in the default installation location for these templates, etc., and, of course, not finding them.
I looked for information online about how to correct or change this, but could not find it. So, I figured it out myself and, below, I'm sharing this step-by-step info with anyone who needs it. If you install templates, etc., to another drive, I hope the following info will help you access them in your FCS programs:
FIRST AND FOREMOST - name this other drive the name you want to live with (which, below, I refer to as "your other drive" - in my case, I call it "Lacie Rugged"). This is critical to do now because every time you change the name of the drive in the future, you'll have to re-do all of the following steps.
SECOND - make a folder called “Library” on this other drive, and tell the FCS2 installation process to install everything here. If you don’t do this, you’ll get a messy install at the top level within the drive!
THIRD - open each of the following four FCS2 programs:
LIVETYPE
- Open LiveType -> Preferences
- Click "+"
- Navigate to your other drive -> Library -> Application Support and "Open" LiveType
SOUNDTRACK PRO
- Click on "Search" Tab (next to "Browser", Command-4)
- Click on "Setup"
- Click "+"
- Navigate to your other drive -> Library -> Application Support -> and "Open" Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro
- Click on "Index Now", give it a few minutes, then "Done"
MOTION
- Open Motion -> Preferences
- Click on the General tab
- Click "Choose" under Content Library...
- Navigate to your other drive -> Library -> Application Support -> Final Cut Studio -> and "Choose" Motion
- Restart Motion for access
DVD STUDIO PRO (this process is a bit more manual than the others)
- In the Palette, click the "Templates" tab
- Option/click in the empty palette area
- Click "Import"
- Navigate to your other drive -> Library -> Application Support -> Final Cut Studio -> DVD Studio Pro
- Open the "Templates" folder and select all
- Click "Import"
- When finished, check both the "Apple" and "Custom" tabs within "Templates" to find the templates (they're probably under "Custom" instead of "Apple" now, due to the way FCS2 installed them, but they're there)
- repeat the above procedure for "Styles" and "Shapes"
This last program is not part of FCS, but if you have SonicFire Pro (which is a great one especially for corporate work, by the way), here's what to do after moving even more files/GBs off of your internal hard drive:
SONICFIRE PRO
- Open SonicFire Pro -> Preferences
- Click on "Folders" tab
- Click on "Add"
- Navigate to your other drive -> Library -> Application Support and "Choose" SmartSound
FINALLY - the payoff! If you've upgraded to FCS2 from FCS1, most if not all of these templates and sound effects files still exist on your hard drive from the FCS1 install. Refer to the installation notes that came with the FCS2 discs to find the previously installed template and sound effects files, etc., and then delete them to re-claim at least 25GB of internal hard drive space!
I've used FCS2 this way for over a month now and it's worked as advertised!
